Instituto de Física de Cantabria (IFCA)

The "Instituto de Física de Cantabria" (IFCA) is a joint research institute of the Universidad de Cantabria (UC) and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (the Spanish National Research Council, CSIC).

The first research areas developed at the institute were astrophysics, statistical physics and particle physics, aiming at understanding the macro-, meso- and micro-cosmos. As a consequence of this basic research and, with the spirit of broadening and complementing the scope of our activities and to establish collaborations with other groups and companies based on the research we do, IFCA created an Advanced Computing and e-Science group in 2007. Also a Meteorology and Data Mining group was created in 2009, evolving from the activities in Meteorology of the Statistical Physics group and focusing on the application of statistical and data mining techniques for climate data analysis.

Since its foundation in 1995, IFCA conducts its high-quality research on basic science, with the overarching goal to understand the fundamental structure of the universe.

The programme will allow to foster multidisciplinary effors among the basic research lines of the institute and to reinforce the positionning of IFCA in its scientific strategy, in addition to the other activities related with research: mainly knowledge transfer, education, outreach.
